Municipality Leaders

Municipalities are at the center of growing demands for access to the Public Right-of-Way to add and maintain utilities. With this increasing responsibility, municipalitites must continue to deliver consistent standards of service to the Public, even as budgets become more constrained. Envista recognizes municipalities and Public Works professionals who apply innovative thinking to these challenges.

Providence, Rhode Island

According to the 2000 Census, Providence is the second fastest growing city in the Northeast and the second largest city in New England with over 173,600 residents. Providence is a major New England hub and serves as the capital of Rhode Island. As a growing city and an important crossroads, Providence faces many challenges in maintaining and building infrastructure.

Currently, Providence has numerous roadway projects underway, including the Rhode Island DOT's Interstate 195 project cutting through the city. A lead pipe replacement project by its water utility, Providence Water, will affect over 25,000 pipes in the next 15 years. In addition, the city's wastewater utility, Narragansett Bay Commission is working on significant improvements at the same time. To help meet its challenges, Envista is proud to have Providence as a Compass partner for infrastructure coordination online.

Cranston, Rhode Island

The City of Cranston is part of the large metropolitan area of Providence, RI and is located just south of the Capital City, with 3 1/2 miles of shoreline on the Providence River where it begins to broaden into Narragansett Bay. Cranston is also bounded by the City of Warwick and the Town of West Warwick on the south, and by the Town of Scituate on the west. Cranston has a geographical area of 28.2 square miles and a population of over 79,000.

As part of the Providence Water service area, Cranston, is facing a significant number of projects that--if uncoordinated--could disrupt their well-managed community. Like other cities, it also faces challenges working in tandem with the DOT to coordinate municipal roadway projects with bridge maintnenance and construction. For these reasons and more, Cranston has joined the Envista Compass Program for infrastructure coordination online.
